Let me introduce you to Bunny and Clyde – two adorable crochet bunnies with cute floppy ears.

Bunny is a cheerful girl; Clyde is her younger silly brother. What is more, both are easy and fun to make.

This post consists of several sections. First, in the Supplies section I provide details about yarn and accessories needed to make both crochet bunnies.

Then in the Important Notes part I’ll detail out some more information about gauge, final measurements and instructions. Finally, in the Pattern section I will include instruction for making the toys.

Supplies needed to complete Crochet Bunnies

Yarn

For this project again I decided to use Yarn Art Jeans because I wanted it to be beginners friendly. Yarn Art Jeans is a mix of cotton and acrylic, therefore it’s soft and easy to work with.

As you have probably already noticed, the body of both bunnies are similar. Both toys only differ by colors used and some finishing, like face details and clothing.

Yarn Art Jeans colors and quantities for Bunny:

Yarn Art Jeans colors and quantities for Clyde:

  • 80 Ashen (I will call it ‘grey’) – 1.5 skeins
  • 86 Champagne (I will call it ‘yellow’) – 0.5 skein
  • 63 Sea Wave (I will call it ‘turquoise’) – 0.5 skein

For eyes and face embroidery we’ll need Drops Loves You # 8, color white and black. Since this yarn is thick, we’ll going to use half of the strands (split it in half). You can replace this yarn with any other cotton yarn if you wish.

Yarn Substitutes

If you are not able to obtain Yarn Art Jeans, or for whatever reason you’d like to use something else, then you can try to find a substitute. Should you want to dig into more details on how to do it, check out my blog post on yarn weights.

Based on my experience and similarity of characteristics, as a yarn substitute for completion of crochet bunnies, I would recommend Alize Cotton Gold, Gazzal Baby Cotton, Scheepjes Softfun or Bernat Cottonish. Additionally, please bear in mind that you may need to adjust yarn quantities needed if you decide to go with a substitute yarn.

(Note: If you are planning to make this toy for anyone with soft skin or allergies then you may want to use Gazzal Baby Cotton as it has OEKO-TEX certificate therefore it should be safe).

Accessories

Additionally, you will need following accessories to create crochet bunnies:

  1. Crochet hook – 3mm (US D-3) and 2.5 mm (US C-2)
  2. Scissors
  3. Stitch markers
  4. Toy fiberfill (Note: if you wish to explore some more options then have a look at my Stuffing for Toys blog post)
  5. Tapestry needle
  6. Row counter
  7. Shaping wire
  8. Optionally two heart shaped buttons

Want to spice up your toy? Add remarkable amigurumi accessories to make your plushie stand out!

Psst: If you purchase an item from this post, I may receive a small cut. There is no extra cost to you and it helps me keep creating free content and patterns. Thank you for your support! Note that each item and price is up to date at the time of publication; however, an item may be sold out or the price may be different at a later date.

Important Notes

TENSION/GAUGE

21 sts/24 rows = 10cm/4 inches square in single crochet

ABBREVIATIONS

  • Mr – magic ring
  • Sc – single crochet
  • Inc – 2 in one
  • Decr – 2 together
  • Ch – chain
  • Slp st – slip stitch

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

  • 35 cm (~ 14 inches) tall
  • 15 cm (~ 6 inches) wide
  • 10 cm (~ 4 inches) deep

NOTES

  • Recommended hook size for ‘Yarn Art Jeans’ yarn is 3.5mm (US E-4), but I am using 3mm (US D-3) one. This is because we want the stitches to be very condensed so that toy stuffing doesn’t shine through.
  • When working in rounds work continuously unless instructed otherwise.
  • For assembly utilize seamless sewing method to make the toy look neater.
  • At the end of each row, in brackets, I included a number which represents the total number of stitches in a given row. It should help tracking if instructions are followed.

Crochet Bunnies Pattern

Both crochet bunnies follow the same body pattern, they only differ in colors. We start with making bunnies’ arms. Then we proceed to crocheting legs, which we’ll join and continue with making the body and the head. Subsequently we create floppy ears and attach them. Lastly, we add face details and clothing. Use 3mm (US D-3) hook unless instructed otherwise.

Arms

Start with cream for Bunny and grey for Clyde. Make 2 and stuff as you go, but not too much in the upper parts as we’d like to keep them rather flat.

  • Ch 6
  • Row 1: work around foundation chain, beginning from the second chain from the hook 4 sc, 4 sc in 1, 3 sc, 3 sc in 1 (14)
  • Rows 2 through 7: 14 sc (14)
  • Row 8: * 5 sc, decr * repeat 2 times (12)
  • Row 9: * 4 sc, decr * repeat 2 times (10)
  • Row 10: * 4 sc, inc * repeat 2 times (12)
  • Row 11: * 5 sc, inc * repeat 2 times (14)
  • Rows 12 through 26: 14 sc (14)
  • Change yarn to pink for Bunny and yellow for Clyde
  • Rows 27 through 34: 14 sc (14)
  • Fasten off and secure yarn.

Neck Stiffener

We’ll need another small component, which we’ll use to stiffen crochet bunnies’ neck. It’s a nail-shaped element and we are going to insert it into the toy’s body later on.

Make 1 using grey yarn for Clyde and cream yarn for Bunny.

  • 6 sc in mr
  • Row 1: * inc * repeat 6 times (12)
  • Rows 2 through 13: 12 sc (12)
  • Row 14: * 1 sc, inc * repeat 6 times (18)
  • Row 15: * 2 sc, inc * repeat 6 times (24)
  • Row 16: * 3 sc, inc * repeat 6 times (30)
  • Now ‘stuff’ the component with a shaping wire (just bend it and twist it to create quite thick ‘nail’).
  • Row 17: * 3 sc, decr * repeat 6 times (24)
  • Row 18: * 1 sc, decr * repeat 8 times (16)
  • Row 19: * decr * repeat 8 times (8)
  • Close the gap and fasten off.

Legs

Make 2 using grey yarn for Clyde and cream yarn for Bunny, stuff as you go.

  • 6 in mr
  • Row 1: * inc * repeat 6 times (12)
  • Row 2: 4 inc, 4 sc, inc, 3 sc (17)
  • Row 3: 1 sc, 6 inc, 6 sc, inc, 3 sc (24)
  • Row 4: * 2 sc, inc * repeat 4 times, 6 sc, 2 inc, 4 sc (30)
  • Row 5: * 3 sc, inc * repeat 4 times, 6 sc, inc, 4 sc, inc, 2 sc (36)
  • Row 6: * 4 sc, inc * repeat 4 times, 6 sc, * inc, 4 sc * repeat 2 times (42)
  • Row 7: * 5 sc, inc * repeat 4 times, 7 sc, inc, 4 sc, inc, 5 sc (48)
  • Rows 8 through 11: 48 sc (48)
  • Row 12: * 6 sc, decr * repeat 6 times (42)
  • Row 13: * 5 sc, decr * repeat 6 times (36)
  • Row 14: 9 sc, * decr, 1 sc * repeat 4 times, 15 sc (32)
  • Row 15: 7 sc, * decr, 1 sc * repeat 4 times, 13 (28)
  • Row 16: 5 sc, * decr, 1 sc * repeat 4 times, 11 sc (24)
  • Row 17: 3 sc, * decr, 1 sc * repeat 4 times, 9 sc (20)
  • Row 18: 5 sc, 2 decr, 11 sc (18)
  • Rows 19 through 33: 18 sc (18)

For the first leg – fasten off, whereby for the second leg – do not finish at this stage as we’ll continue to create the bunny’s belly.

And one note here – it’s not critical but you may want to flatten bunny’s feet a bit to stabilize the toy. In order to do this, take a piece of yarn and make a loop starting from the middle of the bottom, through the top and then back to the bottom (see images on the right). Then tie a knot and hide it inside the foot.

Body & Head

Continue from previous step and stuff as you go.

Row 1: 6 sc along second leg, chain 6, 18 sc around the first leg**, 6 sc into the chain, 12 sc (48)

** it doesn’t matter where exactly you make the first stitch of this part, just place legs in such a way that they face same direction

Rows 2 through 7: 48 sc (48)

Change yarn to yellow for Clyde and pink for Bunny.

  • Rows 8 through 20: 48 sc (48)
  • Row 21: * decr, 22 sc * repeat 2 times (46)
  • Row 22: * decr, 21 sc * repeat 2 times (44)
  • Row 23: * decr, 20 sc * repeat 2 times (42)
  • Rows 24 through 29: 42 sc (42)

In rows 30 and 31 we work both arms in. Lay arms flat and connect both edges of the last row – you should now have 7 stitches (last row of each arm was 14 sc, if you lay it flat then you’ll be left with half, i.e. 7sc).

  • Row 30: decr, 19 sc, decr, 15 sc, 4 sc through first arm and the body (40)  (look at the image)
  • Row 31: 3 sc through first arm and the body, 14 sc, 7 sc through second arm and the body, 16 sc (40)
  • Row 32: * 2 sc, decr * repeat 10 times (30)
  • Change color to cream for Bunny and grey for Clyde.
  • Row 33: * 3 sc, decr * repeat 6 times (24)
  • Row 34: * 2 sc, decr * repeat 6 times (18)
  • Row 35: * 1 sc, decr * repeat 6 times (12)
  • Row 36: 12 sc (12)

We will now continue to creating bunny’s head.

  • Row 37: * 1 sc, inc * repeat 6 times (18)
  • Row 38: * 2 sc, inc * repeat 6 times (24)
  • Row 39: * 3 sc, inc * repeat 6 times (30)
  • Row 40: * 4 sc, inc * repeat 6 times (36)
  • Row 41: * 5 sc, inc * repeat 6 times (42)
  • Row 42: * 6 sc, inc * repeat 6 times (48)
  • Row 43: * 7 sc, inc * repeat 6 times (54)
  • Row 44: * inc, 4 sc * repeat 3 times, 13 sc, * 4 sc, inc * repeat 3 times, 11 sc (60)
  • Row 45: * inc, 5 sc * repeat 3 times, 13 sc, * 5 sc, inc * repeat 3 times, 11 sc (66)

At this point insert the neck stiffener into the neck hole, just as you would stick a nail in it. Push it and make sure it sits securely.

  • Rows 46 through 50: 66 sc (66)
  • Row 51: * decr, 5 sc * repeat 3 times, 13 sc, * 5 sc, decr * repeat 3 times, 11 sc (60)
  • Row 52: * decr, 4 sc * repeat 3 times, 13 sc, * 4 sc, decr * repeat 3 times, 11 sc (54)
  • Row 53: * decr, 3 sc * repeat 3 times, 13 sc, * 3 sc, decr * repeat 3 times, 11 sc (48)
  • Rows 54 through 60: 48 sc (48)
  • Row 61: * 6 sc, decr * repeat 6 times (42)
  • Row 62: * 5 sc, decr * repeat 6 times (36)
  • Row 63: * 4 sc, decr * repeat 6 times (30)
  • Row 64: * 3 sc, decr * repeat 6 times (24)
  • Row 65: * 2 sc, decr * repeat 6 times (18)
  • Row 66: * 1 sc, decr * repeat 6 times (12)
  • Row 67: * decr * repeat 6 times (6)
  • Stuff up, close the gap and fasten off.
Crochet Bunnies body

Crochet Bunnies face details

First we need to create little ‘niches’ at the eye level to make cheeks a little bit exposed. In order to make those take a piece of yarn (grey for Clyde and cream for Bunny) and using tapestry needle make a loop. Start beneath the chin, then through the head, at the eye level (roughly 15 rows from the head top) and back to where you started. Then tie a knot and hide it inside the body. This is illustrated on the images but if you’d like to see more details then have a look at Free Crochet Baby Groot Pattern where I used same technique.

Crochet Bunnies face details

Eyes

Make 2 using 2.5mm hook and half of yarn (i.e. 4 strands instead of 8). Each eye consists of white ‘base’ and black ‘iris’.

White base

  • Chain 9
  • Row 1: Beginning from the second chain from the hook 2 sc, 2 decr, 2 sc (6)
  • Row 2: 3 decr (3)
  • Row 3:
    • LEFT EYE => decr, 1 sc (2)
    • RIGHT EYE => 1 sc, decr (2)

Fasten off and leave tail for sewing.

Black iris

  • 6 in mr
  • Row 1*: Inc, 2 sc

* Note that we don’t make the full ‘round’. Also, if you want to add some character then you can make those 4 stitches in different color (I used navy blue).

Now sew black iris onto the white base, placing the iris towards the corner. Then embroider white spots on the black part to imitate shining.

Once this is done, sew eyes onto the head, placing bottom part at the level of ‘niches’ previously created. Afterwards add eyelashes, eyebrows, nose and mouth (tweak it to make the face look goofier).

Amigurumi Bunnies’ Ears

Make 2 using grey yarn for Clyde and cream yarn for Bunny.

  • Chain 7
  • Row 1: Beginning from the second chain from the hook 6 sc (6)
  • Row 2: 6 sc (6)
  • Row 3: inc, 5 sc (7)
  • Row 4: inc, 6 sc (8)
  • Rows 5 through 42: 8 sc (8)
  • Row 43: decr, 6 sc (7)
  • Row 44: decr, 5 sc (6)
  • Row 45: decr, 4 sc (5)
  • Row 46: decr, 3 sc (4)
  • Row 47: decr, 2 sc (3)
  • Row 48: decr, 1 sc (2)
  • Row 49: decr (1)
  • Row 50: 1 sc (1)

Now make 2 rounds of sc around the ear. Then fasten off and attach ears to the top of the head.

Bunny’s Skirt

Use red yarn.

  • Chain 65
  • Row 1: Beginning from the second chain from the hook 64 sc (64), ch 1, turn
  • Rows 2 through 4: 64 sc (64), ch 1, turn
  • From now we start crocheting around. Just continue after folding the component (look at the image).
  • Row 5: 64 sc (64)
  • Row 6: * 7 sc, inc * repeat 8 times (72)
  • Row 7: * 8 sc, inc * repeat 8 times (80)
  • Row 8: * 9 sc, inc * repeat 8 times (88)
  • Row 9: * 10 sc, inc * repeat 8 times (96)
  • Rows 10 through 12: 96 sc (96)
  • Fasten off and weave in yarn end.

Now using tapestry needle weave in a piece of pink yarn at the level of row 5 or 6. This will hold the skirt once you put it on. Finally, tie a bow for decoration.

Bunny’s Bow

Use red yarn.

  • Chain 7
  • Row 1: Beginning from the second chain from the hook 6 sc (6), ch 1, turn
  • Row 2: 6 sc (6), ch 1, turn
  • Row 3: 6 sc (6)

Fasten off and leave long tail. Take the yarn tail and wrap around the element in the middle thus creating a bow shape. Then attach the bow near one of the ears.

Clyde’s Shorts

Use turquoise yarn.

  • Chain 65
  • Row 1: Beginning from the second chain from the hook 64 sc (64), ch 1, turn
  • Rows 2 through 4: 64 sc (64), ch 1, turn

From now we start crocheting around. Just continue after folding the component, similar to what we have done already for Bunny’s skirt above.

Rows 5 through 15: 64 sc (64)

Fasten off and weave in yarn end. Now using tapestry needle and a piece of yarn connect edges in the middle to create pant legs. Then, again using tapestry needle, weave in a piece of turquoise yarn at the level of row 5 or 6. This will hold the shorts once you put it on. Finally, tie a bow for decoration.

Lastly, if you wish, you can attach small buttons in the middle of the belly to add some character.
