Are you scared of ghosts? I know I am! I mean I don’t like the scary ones that appear on horror movies. The good ones from cartoons and children movies are adorable. And this crochet ghost is one of the charming ones. Can you recognize this character?

Supplies needed to make crochet ghost

If you cannot (or do not want to) use Catona or Camilla, then you can try to find a replacement. Based on my experience I would recommend using Schachenmayr Catania, Patons Grace or Alize Bahar.

TENSION/GAUGE

21 sts/25 rows = 10cm/4 inches square in single crochet

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS (with the hat)

  • 35 cm (~ 14 inches) tall
  • 12 cm (~ 5 inches) wide
  • 10 cm (~ 4 inches) deep

  • When working in rounds work continuously unless instructed otherwise.
  • For assembly utilize seamless joining method to make the toy look neater.
  • At the end of each row, in brackets, I included a number which represents the total number of stitches in a given row. It should help tracking if instructions are followed.

Crochet Ghost Pattern

We start with making arms and white parts for the eyes as we will use them along the way. Then we will make legs and continue working up through the body and head. Later we add face details. As a last step we’ll create glasses and hat .

Arms

Make 2 using blue yarn and stuff as you go. Don’t stuff too much though. Upper parts should remain rather flat.

  • Chain 8, work around the foundation chain
  • Row 1: beginning from the second chain from the hook 6 sc, 3 sc in 1, 5 sc, inc (16)
  • Rows 2 through 8: 16 sc (16)
  • Row 9: 2 decr, 4 sc, 2 decr, 4 sc (12)
  • Row 10: 12 sc (12)
  • Row 11: 1 sc, inc, 5 sc, inc, 4 sc (14)
  • Rows 12 through 18: 14 sc (14)
  • Row 19: 1 sc, decr, * 2 sc, inc * repeat 3 times, 2 sc (16)
  • Row 20: decr, 7 sc, inc, 6 sc (16)
  • Row 21: decr, 2 sc, inc, 8 sc, inc, 2 sc (17)

Eyes

Make 2 using white yarn.

Crochet ghost legs

Make 2 using blue yarn. Fasten off once you make the firs leg. Do not finish after completing the second one – we’ll continue with making the body. Stuff as you go.

  • 6 sc in mr
  • Row 1: 6 inc (12)
  • Rows 3 and 4: 12 sc (12)
  • Row 5: * 3 sc, inc * repeat 3 times (15)
  • Rows 6 and 7: 15 sc (15)
  • Row 8: * 4 sc, inc * repeat 3 times (18)
  • Rows 9 and 10: 18 sc (18)
  • Row 11: * 5 sc, inc * repeat 3 times (21)
  • Row 12: * 6 sc, inc * repeat 3 times (24)
  • For the firs one – finish off.
  • For the second one – chain 2.

Body and head

Continue from the second leg. Stuff as you go.

  • Row 1: 1 sc into any stitch of the last row of the first leg. Mark this stitch – this will be counted as the first stitch of this row. Then continue around this leg, then along the chain, around the second leg and again along the chain. You should have 52 sc. 24 x 2 for both legs and 4 along both sides of the chain.

Stop for a moment. Don’t finish yet. Stuff up. At this stage attach eye whites and then safety eyes. Once done continue with crocheting the remaining part of the head.

  • Row 81: * 3 sc, decr * repeat 6 times (24)
  • Row 82: * 2 sc, decr * repeat 6 times (18)
  • Row 83: * 1 sc, decr * repeat 6 times (12)
  • Row 84: * decr * repeat 6 times (6)

Close the gap and finish off.

Eyebrows and face details

Make 2 eyebrows using steel (grey) yarn. Embroider smile using same yarn. Using black yarn add lines around the eyes simulating eyelashes.

  • Chain 11
  • Row 1: beginning from the second chain from the hook 7 sc, 3 slpst (10), ch 1, turn
  • Row 2: 5 slpst, 5 sc (10)
  • Fasten off and leave tail for sewing.

Sew eyebrows a bit higher above the eyes. We’ll add glasses later on and we need the eyebrows to be placed slightly above.

Crochet ghost hat

Use white yarn.

  • Chain 9, work around the foundation chain
  • Row 1: beginning from the second chain from the hook 7 sc, 3 sc in 1, 6 sc, inc (18)
  • Row 2: inc, 6 sc, 3 inc, 6 sc, 2 inc (24)
  • Row 3: 2 inc, 7 sc, inc, 1 sc, inc, 1 sc, inc, 7 sc, inc, 1 sc, inc (31)
  • Row 4: 1 sc, inc, 10 sc, inc, 1 sc, inc, 1 sc, inc, 11 sc, inc, 1 sc, inc (37)
  • Row 5: 2 sc, inc, 11 sc, inc, 2 sc, inc, 2 sc, inc, 12 sc, inc, 2 sc, inc (43)
  • Row 6: * 2 sc, inc * repeat twice, 8 sc, * inc, 2 sc * repeat 4 times, inc, 8 sc, inc, 2 sc, inc, 4 sc (52)

Fasten off and weave in the yarn tail. Push the top of the hat slightly inside as shown on the image. Put the hat onto the crochet ghost head.

Glasses

You will need white yarn and around 40 cm (~ 16 inches) of shaping wire.

  • Chain 101
  • Row 1: beginning from the second chain from the hook 100 sc (100), ch 1, turn
  • Row 2: 100 sc (100)
  • Finish off and leave long tail for sewing.

Now place the wire in the middle and sew up along the long edge.

We will now bend the component to obtain the glasses shape. The length of the element is around 42 cm (~ 17 inches). Each segment between folds should measure roughly 3.5 cm (~ 1.3 inch). Follow the arrows on the image below. As a final step – sew along the top edge to stabilize and fix wire position.

  1. Even though I have never attempted crochet, the crochet ghost appears to be quite amusing and simple to make. But I think this will delight my cousin, who is really interested in crocheting and would love to do things like sew eyebrows, faces, glasses, eyes, and so on.
    She will adore it because she is a quick learner, and thanks to you, you have clearly defined all of the processes required to do the task.

  2. This is so cute!  I also like the instructions, which are very thorough.  For someone like me, this is very helpful as crocheting is not my forte!  However, it is something I like to do and with winter fast approaching, serves up as a good crafting opportunity.

    While I’m not exactly a fan of Halloween, I do appreciate the cuteness this ghost has!  The opportunity from my end to do a little bit of tweaking to truly customize it is something I will engage in!
