I finally managed to make something for myself. I typically make a lot of various toys and accessories for friends and neighbors, as well as do commission work. This time I decided to give myself a treat. Since I typically have all sorts of pens, pencils and hooks lying around, I wanted to make something fun to help me organize space around me. I figured that crochet pencil holder in the form of kangaroo would get me what I need. And so here it is.

Supplies needed for the kangaroo crochet pencil holder

Yarn

For this project again I decided to use Scheepjes Cahlista yarn. I just simply love the final touch. Plus, they always have that shade I am looking for. I used following colors and quantities:

  • 157 “Root beer” (I will call it ‘brown’) – 2.5 skeins
  • 246 “Icy Pink” (I will call it ‘pink’) – few meters
  • 130 “Old lace” (I will call it ‘cream’) – 1.2 skeins
  • a little bit of any black yarn for embroidering of the muzzle

Yarn Substitutes

If Scheepjes Cahlista is not available in your area, or for whatever reason you don’t want to use it, then try to find a replacement. I would recommend cotton yarns for this pattern, something like Gazzal Baby Cotton XL (they have great colors), Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton, Drops Paris or Bernat Handicrafter.

18 sts/19 rows = 10cm/4 inches square in single crochet

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS (with ears and tail)

Kangaroo crochet pencil holder pattern

Head and body are made as one piece, whereby ears, legs, tail and arms are separate and sewn in. Stuff as you go.

Head and Body

We start at the top of the head and work towards the bottom of the body, using brown yarn.

Crochet kangaroo ears

We need 2 ears. Each ear consists of one brown and one pink part, therefore, make 2 pink ones and 2 brown ones. Pattern for each is same.

  • Chain 5
  • Row 1: Beginning from the second chain from the hook 4 sc (4), ch 1, turn
  • Row 2: inc, 2 sc, inc (6), ch 1, turn
  • Row 3: inc, 4 sc, inc (8), ch 1, turn
  • Row 4: 8 sc (8), ch 1, turn
  • Row 5: decr, 6 sc (7), ch 1, turn
  • Row 6: decr, 5 sc (6), ch 1, turn
  • Row 7: decr, 2 sc, decr (4), ch 1, turn
  • Row 8: decr, decr (2), ch 1, turn
  • Row 9: decr (1)

For the pink component – finish off. For the brown one – don’t finish or cut yarn yet. We now need to connect one brown element with one pink. Lay pink one onto the brown and join them by making single crochet stitches around. Then fold the ear and sew along the bottom edge, fasten off and leave tail for sewing.

At this stage, attach ears to the head and embroider the muzzle. You can also add white ‘rim’ around the safety eyes, using cream yarn. It’s not critical to do it right now but if you finish face at this stage then you’ll find it easier to position remaining parts of the crochet kangaroo pencil holder later on.

Crochet Kangaroo Arms

Make 2. Until a certain point, which I highlight below, both arms have same pattern. The upper parts of left and right arms are different (mirrored). Stuff as you go but don’t stuff too much in the upper parts of arms.

  • Chain 4
  • Row 1: beginning from the second chain from the hook 2 sc, 5 in 1, 1 sc, inc (10) [work around the foundation chain]
  • Rows 2 through 4: 10 sc (10)
  • Row 5: 1 sc, 2 decr, 2 sc, 2 inc, 1 sc (10)
  • Row 6: 2 decr, 3 sc, 2 inc, 1 sc (10)
  • Row 7: 1 sc, 2 inc, 2 sc, 2 decr, 1 sc (10)
  • Row 8: 2 sc, 2 inc, 2 sc, 2 decr (10)
  • Rows 9 through 11: 10 sc (10)
  • Row 12: inc, 2 sc, 2 decr, 2 sc, inc (10)
  • Row 13: 2 inc, 2 sc, 2 decr, 2 sc (10)
  • Rows 14 and 15: 10 sc (10)

Now we stop working around and turn at the end of each row.

RIGHT ARM

  • Row 16: 9 sc (9), ch 1, turn
  • Row 17: decr, 5 sc (6), ch 1, turn
  • Row 18: decr, 2 sc, decr (4), ch 1, turn
  • Row 19: 2 decr (2)

Fasten off and leave tail for sewing.

LEFT ARM

  • Row 16: 4 sc (4), ch 1, turn
  • Row 17: decr, 5 sc (6), ch 1, turn
  • Row 18: decr, 2 sc, decr (4), ch 1, turn
  • Row 19: 2 decr (2)

Fasten off and leave tail for sewing.

Legs

Make 2, both are same. Stuff as you go but don’t stuff too much in the upper parts.

  • Rows 7 through 16: 19 sc (19), ch 1, turn
  • Row 17: decr, 15 sc, decr (17), ch 1, turn
  • Row 18: decr, 13 sc, decr (15), ch 1, turn
  • Row 19: 15 sc (15), ch 1, turn

Crochet kangaroo bag

We make the bag using two strands of cream Cahlista and hook # 4mm. This stiffens the bag of the crochet pencil holder so that it’s able to hold such objects as pencils, crayons or crochet hooks.

We first make a base ‘trapezoid’, then crochet around its 3 sides to create scoop-like element.

  • Chain 10
  • Row 1: beginning from the second chain from the hook 9 sc (9), ch 1, turn
  • Row 2: inc, 7 sc, inc (11), ch 1, turn
  • Row 3: inc, 9 sc, inc (13), ch 1, turn
  • Row 4: inc, 11 sc, inc (15), ch 1, turn
  • Row 5: inc, 13 sc, inc (17), ch 1, turn
  • Rows 6 through 7: 17 sc (17), ch 1, turn
  • Row 8: 17 sc (17)

Now going counterclockwise crochet around 3 sides of the ‘trapezoid’. Row number 8 should remain open. You should have 25 stitches => 9 for the row 1 above and 2 x number of rows (i.e. 8).

  • Rows 9 though 17: 25 sc (25), ch 1, turn
  • Row 18: 25 sc (25)

Fasten off and leave tail for sewing.

Crochet pencil holder assembly

Follow the steps outlined below:

(1) Attach the belly cover. Start positioning this element from the top (i.e. nearing crochet kangaroo’s head).

(2) Attach arms.

(3) Sew in legs. Position them at the bottom, creating a V shape. At this stage you’ll most likely notice that the crochet kangaroo is leaning towards the backside. That is absolutely fine – we will re-balance with the tail and the bag.

(4) Attach tail.

(5) Attach kangaroo bag. Line it up at the bottom and on the sides with the belly cover.

  1. Another awesome crochet pattern. My sister, her husband and my 2 nieces are currently visiting. They came all the way from the land down under. So, it would bee super cool if I make a couple of Kangaroo for them for their school. They will have to go back to class in about 2 weeks.
