Free Crochet Baby Groot Pattern

I created this free crochet Baby Groot pattern after seeing the Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Who doesn’t like the cute and silly baby tree?

My amigurumi Baby Groot pattern is very simple, therefore easy to follow and beginner friendly. After all, the character wasn’t that complicated 🙂

In summary, this article consists of several sections:

1. First, I lay out supplies needed for completion of the toy.
2. Then I provide important notes related to the completion of Crochet Baby Groot pattern.
3. Lastly, I provide details for Groot amigurumi body decorations.

So, without further ado – let’s get started!

Supplies and Accessories needed for Crochet Baby Groot Pattern

Yarn

For this project I was looking for a yarn that would give me that wood-like appearance and feel. It took me a while to find a perfect match, but I did get it eventually – Drops Bomull-Lin. In essence, it’s a mix of linen and cotton and surprisingly it’s really pleasant to work with. To be honest, at first, I thought it may be a bit difficult as it feels a bit stiff and rough. After all, I really enjoyed working with that yarn.

I used 3 skeins of 03 „Light Beige” (I will call it ‘beige) and half a skein of 05 „Brown” (I will call it ‚brown’). Furthermore, we’ll need a tiny bit of 16 „Black” (I will call it ‚black’) for eyes (you can replace it with any other black yarn that you happen to have at home). Additionally, we will use a tiny bit of white yarn (any). We will only use it to add highlights to eyes to simulate shining, therefore it can be replaced with thicker white sewing thread.

On top of the above, we will need half a skein of Drops Safran 60 „Moss Green”  or 04 “Sage Green” (I will call it ‚green’) for green head top and leaves.

Yarn Substitutes

If you are not able to find Drops Bomul-lin, then I would recommend couple substitutes based on my experience and yarn characteristics:

• Juniper Moon – Zooey Knitting Yarn
• Berroco Chai Linen Silk Blend Yarn
• Rowan Creative Linen
• or Fibra Natura Flax.

You can use any yarn but I would recommend the linen ones as they would give you that lovely ‘wooden look’.

Furthermore, Drops Safran can be substituted with Gazzal Organic Baby Cotton yarn (427 Green) or Gazzal Giza yarn (olive green 2462).

Accessories needed for crochet Baby Groot project

In order to make Groot amigurumi you will need following accessories:

• crochet hook – 3mm (US D-3)
• 2mm (US B-1) crochet hook
• scissors
• stitch markers
• toy fiberfill (Note: if you wish to explore some more options then have a look at my Stuffing for Toys blog post)
• tapestry needle

Important notes related to the Crochet Baby Groot pattern

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

• 32 cm (~ 13 inches) tall
• 18 cm (~ 7 inches) wide
• 9 cm (~ 4 inches) deep

TENSION/GAUGE

22 sts/24 rows = 10cm/4 inches square in single crochet

ABBREVIATIONS

NOTES

• First and foremost, recommended hook size for ‘Drops Bomull-Lin’ yarn is 5mm (US H-8), but I am using 3mm (US D-3) one. This is because we want the stitches to be very condensed so that toy stuffing doesn’t shine through.
• When working in rounds work continuously unless instructed otherwise.
• For assembly utilize seamless joining method so that the toy looks neater.
• Lastly, at the end of each row, in brackets, I included a number which represents the total number of stitches in a given row. It should help tracking if instructions are followed.

Amigurumi Baby Groot Crochet Pattern

We start with making toy’s head, then crochet legs and body, finishing with arms. Lastly, we add branches and leaves. We use 3mm (US D-3) unless instructed otherwise.

Crochet Baby Groot Head

The pattern itself is easy – head resembles a hazelnut with a green top 🙂

Head Bottom

Start with beige yarn.

• 6 sc in mr
• Row 1: * inc * repeat 6 times (12)
• Row 2: * 1 sc, inc * repeat 6 times (18)
• Row 3: * 2 sc, inc * repeat 6 times (24)
• Row 4: * 5 sc, inc * repeat 4 times (28)
• Row 5: * 6 sc, inc * repeat 4 times (32)
• Row 6: * 7 sc, inc * repeat 4 times (36)
• Row 7: * 8 sc, inc * repeat 4 times (40)
• Row 8: * 9 sc, inc * repeat 4 times (44)
• Row 9: * 10 sc, inc * repeat 4 times (48)
• Row 10: * 5 sc, inc * repeat 8 times (56)
• Rows 11 through 20: 56 sc (56)

Now change yarn to green.

Head Top

Make using green yarn.

Lastly, fasten off securely and leave long tail for sewing. Now we are going to join bottom and top together.

Firstly, insert top onto the bottom. Note that last 3 rows of both parts are identical so both items should fit together perfectly.

Then, using tapestry needle, sew both items together along the top edge. If it feels a bit ‘wobbly’ then also sew along the row just beneath where row with double crochets started (look at the pictures).

Face details

Now we will add some character and cuteness to the face. For this purpose, we’ll create small ‘dales’ using tapestry needle and beige yarn.

As a side note, I like this technique as it allows for more 3D face shaping and I tend to use it quite often, for example in my Crochet Bunnies Free Pattern.

Roughly at the level where eyes will be placed (~ 9 rows below the point where the green part starts), symmetrically, make little niches. Likewise for lips – roughly 8 or 9 rows below eyes. Look at the picture below – those are marked with red arrows.

In order to do this pull yarn from the bottom of the head, through required points and back to where we started. Then we need to pull the thread and tie a knot. If you look at the images – I marked this move with pink arrows. Start and end points are also highlighted with red star.

In summary, follow the moves (separately for each eye and mouth):

• First – insert the needle at the bottom,
• Second – pull through the middle of the head to where the yellow dots are,
• Third – come back to where the blue dots are,
• Fourth – pull through the head until you reach back the bottom,
• Fifth – pull both thread ends at the bottom and tie a knot.

Do not worry how that bottom part looks like now – this is where the body will be attached so it will be hidden anyway.

At this stage we will make and then we’ll add eyes, eyebrows and lips.

Crochet Baby Groot Eyes

Make 2, each eye consists of brown base and black top.

BROWN BASE

Use brown yarn.

• Chain 5
• Row 1: Beginning from the 3^rd chain from the hook 2 sc, 3 in 1, continue working around the base chain, 2 sc, 3 in 1 (10)
• Row 2: 3 sc, inc, continue working around, 4 sc, inc, 1 sc (12)

As a last step, fasten off and leave tail for sewing.

BLACK TOP

Use black yarn.

• 6 in mr
• * inc * repeat 6 times (12)

Fasten off and leave tail for sewing.

First, sew black circle onto the brown base, slightly on the side. Afterwards, sew eyes onto the head (place them centered where we created little niches before). Subsequently, embroider eyebrows and lips using brown yarn and tapestry needle. Lastly, with white yarn or thread add little sparkles to the eyes.

Groot Amigurumi Legs

Make 2, start with brown yarn.

• 6 sc in mr
• Row 1:  * inc * repeat 6 times (12)
• Row 2: * 1 sc, inc * repeat 6 times (18)
• Row 3: * 2 sc, inc * repeat 6 times (24)
• Row 4: * 3 sc, inc * repeat 6 times (30)
• Row 5:  30 fpsc (30)
• Rows 6 through 10: 30 sc (30)
• Change yarn to beige.
• Rows 11 through 18: 30 sc (30)
• Row 19: * 8 sc, decr * repeat 3 times (27)
• Rows 20 through 22: 27 sc (27)

For the first leg at this stage fasten off, cut and then secure the thread. Afterwards weave in yarn end. In case of the second leg – do not cut thread as we will continue working around the body.

After that, connect both legs as a continuation of second leg. In order to do that make 3 slip stitches to join any 3 stitches of both legs (this is marked with a red arrow on the image).

Baby Groot Body

Continue from the previous step and stuff as you go.

• Row 1: Continue working around both legs as shown on the image above – follow blue arrows. Blue star represents your starting point. Make 48 sc. Each  leg had 27 sc in the final row, we connected both legs using 3 stitches so now each leg has 24 sc ‘available’ for use. That is why we should come back to 48 stitches when working around both legs.
• Rows 2 through 8: 48 sc (48)
• Row 9: * 10 sc, decr * repeat 4 times (44)
• Row 10: 44 sc (44)
• Row 11: * 9 sc, decr * repeat 4 times (40)
• Rows 12 through 17: 40 sc (40)
• Row 18: * 8 sc, decr * repeat 4 times (36)
• Row 19: 36 sc (36)
• Row 20: * 7 sc, decr * repeat 4 times (32)
• Row 21: * 2 sc, decr * repeat 8 times (24)
• Row 22: * 4 sc, decr * repeat 4 times (20)
• Rows 23 through 26: 20 sc (20)
• Row 27: 20 sc (20), ch 1, turn

Neck

Now we are going to create the toy’s neck by crocheting a collar-like shape. Therefore, we stop working around and turn at the end of each row (continue from previous section).

• Row 28: 12 sc (12), ch 1, turn
• Row 29: decr, 8 sc, decr (10), ch 1, turn
• Row 30: decr, 6 sc, decr (8), ch 1, turn
• Row 31: decr, 4 sc, decr (6)

Lastly, fasten off and leave long tail for sewing.

Now connect the body to the head. Note that our neck opening should cover the place where you previously tied knots. More likely then not you may want to stuff up before finishing sewing to ensure the head isn’t too wobbly.

Groot Amigurumi Arms

Make two using beige yarn. Note that until certain point (marked in the pattern below) both arms are identical, then they diverge. Both are described.

FINGERS

We start with making fingers. For this purpose we use 2 mm (US B-1) hook and beige yarn split in half (Drops Bomull-Lin is a 4-ply yarn, just use 2).

Finger 1 (thumb)

• 6 sc in mr
• Rows 1 through 3: 6 sc (6)
• Row 4: 1 sc, inc, inc, 3 sc (8)

Lastly, fasten off and leave tail for sewing.

Fingers 2 (forefinger) and 4 (ring finger)

• 6 sc in mr
• Rows 1 through 5: 6 sc (6)

Lastly, fasten off and leave tail for sewing.

Finger 3 (middle finger)

• 6 sc in mr
• Rows 1 through 6: 6 sc (6)

Lastly, fasten off and leave tail for sewing.

Finger 5 (small finger)

• 6 sc in mr
• Rows 1 through 4: 6 sc (6)

Lastly, fasten off and leave tail for sewing.

Simply join finger 2 with 3, 3 with 4 and then 4 with 5 (marked with green stars on the image above). Leave out finger 1 for now because this finger will be joined with the palm at the very end.

ARM

Change hook to 3mm (US D-3) and use all 4 plies (full) beige yarn. We will now continue crocheting to make palm and then full arm. For that purpose start working at finger 5, then work towards finger 2 and around back to finger 5 (as shown on the image).

• Row 1: 16 sc around the fingers.In order to do it just make 2 sc in each finger on both sides.
• Row 2: * decr, 2 sc * repeat 4 times (12)
• Rows 3 through 5: 12 sc (12)
• Row 6: * 1 sc, decr * repeat 4 times (8)
• Row 7: 8 sc (8)
• Stuff.
• Row 8: * 3 sc, inc * repeat 2 times (10)
• Row 9: * 4 sc, inc * repeat 2 times (12)
• Row 10: * 2 sc, inc * repeat 4 times (16)
• Rows 11 through 15: 16 sc (16)
• Row 16: * 6 sc, decr * repeat 2 times (14)
• Rows 17 through 26: 14 sc (14)

Similarly to the neck we will now create collar-like shape.

Note that at this point the pattern for left and right arms diverge, continue working, do not cut thread.

Afterwards stuff up and attach thumb to the palm and arms to the body.

Crochet Baby Groot Body Decorations

Now add body decorations. In order to do it start with applying brown yarn around the body to imitate wooden structure. All you need to do is to wrap long piece of brown yarn around the body. First start with legs, then move up and finish with arms. Furthermore, to secure the yarn on both ends just tie a knot and then hide it inside the body. In order to prevent brown yarn from moving around, just attach it to the body through tiny loops (look at the images below).

Finally, add leaves – make as many as you want and place them wherever you feel looks best. Note that you don’t need to sew them into the body completely. Because leaves tend to be shaky, it’s enough to catch them in the middle.

Leaves

Use green yarn and hook size 2mm (US B-1).

Chain 4

• Row 1: Beginning from the second chain from the hook 3 sc, ch 1, turn (3)
• Row 2: inc, 1 sc, inc, ch 1, turn (5)
• Row 3: decr, 3 sc, ch 1, turn (4)
• Row 4: decr, 2 sc, ch 1, turn (3)
• Row 5: decr, 1 sc, ch 1, turn (2)
• Row 6: decr (1)

Lastly, fasten off and leave tail for sewing. Afterwards, attach leaves to the body.

And you are done!
